He was appointed as a Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant, RNAS, 24/04/1917; proceeded to England and transferred to RFC, 27/09/1917. Served in No.84 Squadron, 22/10/1917 to 18/04/1918; in No.24 Squadron, 18/04/1918 - 19/06/1918. He served at TDS Cranwell, No.4 TDS, Hooton (Flight Commander and Instructor) and No.51 TDS, Shotworth (there as of 7 November 1918); No.1 Squadron, CAF, 29 November 1918 to 5/07/1919; officer commanding, War Trophy Party, Canada, 5/071919 to 7 January 1920. He joined the (CAF) Canadian Air force - later the Royal Canadian Air Force. He participated in the Trans-Canada Flight of 1920. He Commanded Station Winnipeg (/05/1925 - 08/1927). He attended the RAF Staff College. He was appointed as the Assistant Director of Civil Government Operations. He was (June to December 1933) Acting Senior Air Officer, RCAF. He Commanded RCAF Station Trenton for two years. He attended the Imperial Defence College. In March 1938 he was appointed first Commanding Officer of Western Air Command. He was appointed as the Air Member for Organization and Training (October 1939). He served as Deputy Chief of Air Staff (November 1940). He served as AOC No.1 Training Command (July 1942). He served as AOC Eastern Air Command (January 1943). He served as AOC RCAF Overseas (April 1945 to July 1946). He was appointed as an Air Marshal RCAF. (He was retired 1947.) |
