He went to sea in 1872. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He arrived in Burrard's Inlet in 1876 in the bark Antioch. He worked on the tug Etta White to 1880. He then went to the Columbia River and worked as quartermaster on several steamers. In 1883 he joined the tug Pilot at Victoria as Mate for three years. In 1886 he was then Master of the tug Belle. He commanded the Active. In 1893 he was appointed Pilot in the Nanaimo District and later in the year in the Vancouver Pilotage District. |
