He was appointed as a Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RNAS 1917. He was appointed as a Flight Sub-Lieutenant RNAS 1917. In 918 he served in HMS Ark Royal.

Anecdotes
While serving in HMS Ark Royal he was launched to pursue the German cruisers Goeben and Breslau that had sailed from Constantinople. He ran into German seaplanes that shot him down.
