He was an apprentice serving 4.5 years in the East India trade. He was qualified as a Master Mariner (Extra Master). He served in vessels around the world and came to Vancouver in 1886. He served as Master of the Maude, Mamie, Spratt's Ark and tug Tepic. He served for a period with the Canada Department of Marine and Fisheries. In 1892 he served as Secretary of the Master Mariners Association of British Columbia. (He was appointed as a Marine Pilot on 05/07/1892.) He served as a Pilot for the New Westminster - Yale, Port of Vancouver and Fraser river pilotage districts. |

He was the Pilot on one of the vessels when the Tartar and the Charmer collided off Sandheads 19/11/1909. He was the pilot in groundings in 1907, 1916. |
