Biography
He was appointed as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Newfoundland in 1813. During his term permission was given to lease land to settlers for cultivation. He returned to England in 1816. He was buried at Greenwich Hospital, London UK.
 
Military Service
He entered the Royal Navy in 1770 as a Midshipman RN serving in H.M.S. Bellona (Captain John Montagu RN) in 1770. In 1776 he served in HMS Romney and visited Newfoundland with Governor Montagu. He was appointed as a Lieutent RN in 1778. He served in H.M.S. Ramillies 1778. He served in H.M.S. Prince George 1779. He was appointed as a Commander RN 1782. He served in HMS Rhinoceros (In command) 1782. He served in HMS Bonetta (In command) 1782. He was appointed as a Captain RN 1789. He served in HMS Southampton (In command) 1789. He served in HMS Niger (In command) 1790-93. He served in HMS London (In command) 1793. He served in HMS Galatea (In command) 1794. He served in HMS Boudicea (In command) 1797. He served in H.M.S. Superb (In command) 1801. He was present under Rear-Admiral Sir James Saumarez RN in an attack near Cape Trafalgar on a combined French and Spanish fleet in 1801. He was with Admiral Nelson off Toulon in 1803. He was appointed as an Honorary Colonel of Royal Marines 1805. He served in HMS Ganges (In command) 1807. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN 1807. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN 1811. He was appointed as the Commodore-Governor of Newfoundland (and the neighbouring islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, which were then in British hands) in 31/05/1813 - 05/09/1816. He was appointed as an Honourary Major-General of Royal Marines 07/05/1818. He was appointed as Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 12/08/1819). He was appointed as the Governor of Greenwich Hospital in 1821. He was appointed as an Admiral RN 1825.
