He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman RNCVR. He served in HMT Loch Eye. (He died on active service).

Anecdotes

He was buried at Templetown Old Church Graveyard. HMT Loch Eye was sunk with all hands on Friday 20th April 1917 by a mine from the German submarine UC-33 one and a quarter miles south-west off Hook Point, Fethard, Co. Wexford. Seven were lost with two unidentified seamen being recovered and buried in Templetown grave yard; one identified sailor, R. Pirrie, was returned home to his family for burial.
