Biography
He was educated at Trinity College Dublin 1823-24. He married Georgina Mildred Macartney 18/05/1839. Afterwards he was on the staff of the Commissioner of Public Works for Ireland during the Irish Famine of 1846-7 and was appointed as Poor Law Inspector in the Irish Relief Mission until the office was abolished in 1851. He was appointed as Governor of The Gambia in 1852 but before he could assume office he was appointed as Governor of Sierra Leone 09/1852. Consul-General in Sherbro County (West Africa) August 1854. He was appointed as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Western Australia January 1855 - December 1861. Governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island and Commander-in-Chief. Knighted 1868. He was appointed as the Governor of West African Settlements. He was appointed as the Governor of Hong Kong 1872-77. He was appointed as the Governor of Queensland 1877-83. He died on board the steamer Orient in the Red Sea off the coast of Aden while returning home and was buried at sea.

He was appointed as an Ensign 68th Regiment (With seniority dated 01/05/1827). He served in the Ionian Islands 1828-37. He was appointed as Lieutenant (68th Rgt) (With seniority dated 01/02/1832). He served in British North America 1838-39 and 1841-44. He was appointed as a Captain (68th Regt) (With seniority dated 01/06/1840). (He was retired on half-pay 1840, and he sold out in 1848.) He was appointed as Vice-Admiral of Vancouver Island 1863-66.
