He was a labourer at the time of his recruitment into the navy.
 
Military Service
In 1914 he was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman RNCVR. He was appointed as an Able-Seaman RNCVR during the First World War. He served in HMCS Rainbow. (He was demobilized.)
