In 1751 he was engaged in merchant service in coastal trading between Louisbourg and Quebec. In 1756 he was appointed in command of a frigate on Lake Ontario by Governor Vaudreuil. In 1767-75 he was trading to the West Indies. He was in command of Providence during the blockade of Quebec by the Americans. In 1776 he was appointed to command HMS Seneca and as commanding officer of the fleet on Lake Ontario. In 1778 he was appointed as Master and commander in the Provincial Naval Service and Commodore of the naval fleet on Lake Ontario. (In 1784 he retired on half pay.) |
