Biography
He was the son of Brownlow Villiers Layard F.R.G.S. Lieut.-Col. formerly Gloucester Regt. of Vesuvius Bay, Saltspring Island, British Columbia, Canada. He attended the Naval Academy, Gosport, 1902-04 and held a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the City Guilds of London. He was an apprentice at shipyards in Cowes IOW, for two years before moving to Canada. In 1905 he went with his brother Henry Camville Layard to the north end of Salt Spring Island. He was living in Ganges, Saltspring Island British Columbia when he married, June 1914. He proceeded to England with wife and child to enlist, 1915. After the First World War he and his brother opened a machine shop and marina in the south corner of the cove next to the government wharf at Vesuvius.
 
Military Service
He was appointed Lieutenant RNVR (With seniority dated 06/08/1915). He served in HMS President for Air Service 18/09/1915. He served in Kingsnorth Airship Station (employed on airship construction) 18/12/1915. He served in Pembroke Airship Station (engineer on gas, power, transport, airships buildings) 18/03/1916 - 18/12/1916. He served in #6 Wing (RNAS) 18/03/1917 through to early 1918. He served in the Adriatic Group RAF 18/06/1918 - 10/1918. He served in #66 Wing RAF 18/12/1918. He was the Officer Comanding, Adriatic Group Depot, 1918-1919. (He was demobilized.) He was appointed as a Squadron Leader RCAF. (He was mobilized for Second World War Service). He served in the RCAF as an aeronautical engineer, 1940-1945. He was appointed as a Group Captain RCAF. He served in RCAF Trenton for No.6 Repair Depot as Commanding Officer 1944. (He was demobilized.)
