Biography
He grew up in the prairie cities of Saskatoon, Regina, Edmonton and Calgary. He is a graduate of the University of Calgary, earning an MA in 1980 and postgraduate work in 2000. In civilian life, Commander McKenzie retired from the Calgary Board of Education, as a teacher, principal, Area Director and most recently Director responsible for Chinook Learning Services and its Continuing Education, and Adult Education programs.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as an Officer Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) 09/1967. He served in HMCS Tecumseh for UNTD 1967-1968. He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant RCN(R) 1968. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RCN(R) 1969. He was appointed as a Lieutenant (N) (NR). He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander (NR). He was appointed as a Commander (NR). He served in HMCS Tecumseh as Commanding Officer 1987-1990. Appointed to CIOR - Interallied Confederation of Reserve Officers at NATO HQ in Brussels. (He was released.)

Anecdotes
He was appointed as Aide de Camp to both the Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of Alberta and the Governor General of Canada. He has served in postings on both coasts, the Great Lakes, the U.S. and Europe. He attended Canada's Staff College in Toronto and the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Appointed to CIOR - Interallied Confederation of Reserve Officers at NATO HQ in Brussels. Commander McKenzie served as District Commander, St. John's, Newfoundland where he was responsible for coastal defence. Commander McKenzie was the Alberta Liaison Officer to the Canadian Forces Liaison Council. As such, he was Alberta's bridge between the Reserve Forces and civilian business and industry.
