He went to sea at age 14. He arrived in Victoria BC in September 1886. He was Master of the schooner Mary Taylor and was involved in a confrontation with US Revenue Cutters in July 1887. In 1888 he sailed in the Western Slope. He brought the Beatrice back from Japan and sailed her with an indian crew in the Bering Sea in 1889. In 1890 he sailed the E.B. Marvin in the Bering Sea. He went to Halifax to bring back the Maud S. which he operated on the coast to 1893 when the schooner was seized and taken to Japan where he was released. He fitted out in Japan in 1894 and sailed back to Victoria. He was appointed as a British Columbia Marine Pilot. |
