(He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He came to the Pacific coast in 1858 first as Quartermaster on the steamship Columbia and afterward as mate on several vessels. In 1864 he served as Master of the missionary schooner Carolina. He was Master of the schooner Surprise out of Victoria in 1865. Afterwards he was Master of the Meg Merrilles and in the steamer Emma when she laid cable from Victoria to the mainland. On 26/08/1869 he was appointed as a Marine Pilot in the Burrard Inlet and Nanaimo Districts. In 1874 he was suspended for 12 months for his actions which resulted in the ship Garza going on the rocks. He was re-appointed by the new Board on 21/06/1877. In 1878 his licence was cancelled. In 1879 he had charge of the Berens Island Lighthouse (Victoria Harbour). |

A.C. (Fred) Rogers reports that, "On January 22, 1873 the American Bark Almatia frounded on Gossip Shoal at the entrance to Active Pass while under tow by the Cariboo and Fly. Loaded with lumber Captain MacKinnon was the pilot. |
