He was a mariner in Australian coastal and deep sea ships. (He was qualified as a Mate (Foreign-going)). He served in a small survey vessel in Victoria BC. After his release from hospital after the First World War he joined the Union Steamship Company. In 1920 he served in the Cowichan as Second Mate. In 1932 he served in the Cheloshin as Chief Officer. In 1937 he servedas Chief Officer in the Catala. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner). In 1940 he served in the Lady Rose as Master. He served in the Lady Pam as Master. He served in the Lady Alexandra as Master. He served in the Chilcotin (Union Steamship Line) as Master. He served as Marine Superintendent of the Union Steamship Line. |

He served in the RNCVR during the First World War. He is said to have served in a submarine in Victoria BC. (He transferred to the Army and was sent overseas. He was gassed and blinded.) |
