He was a Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman RCNVR 1940. He served in H.M.S. Raleigh (Officer Training Establishment) Training (Mess 27 Collingwood) in 1940. He served in H.M.S. King Alfred (Officer Training Establishment). (CFR). He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RCNVR. He was appointed as a Lieutenant (Temp.) RCNVR (With seniority dated 31/12/1940). He wa captured during the Dieppe Raid. He was held in Prisoner of War Camp Oflag Seven B (Germany) after being captured at Dieppe France when his landing craft was shot up. Later he was moved to Marlag und Milag Nord Prisoner of War Camp in 1943. (He was released in 1945.) He was appointed as a Lieutenant RCN(R) (With seniority dated 31/12/1940). He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander RCN(R) (With seniority dated 01/01/1948). He served in HMCS York as Commanding Officer (UNTD) 1947. (He was released.)
