He was a farmer at the time of his recruitment into the navy.

He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman (RNCVR) on 02/11/1917. In 1917 he served in HMCS Margaret. He was appointed as an Able-Seaman (RNCVR). He was appointed as a Leading Seaman (RNCVR). (He was demobilized.)
