Biography

 

Military Service

He entered the Royal Navy in 1736/37-1741 as a scholar at the Academy in Portsmouth. He served in H.M.S. Tilbury. He served in H.M.S. Romney and H.M.S. Princess Mary. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 1743/44). He served in H.M.S. Anglesea and H.M.S. Royal Sovereign. He was appointed as a Commander RN in 1746. He served in H.M.S. Serpent (In command) in 1746. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 21/05/1748). He served in H.M.S. Inverness (In command) in 1748. He served in H.M.S. Romney (In command) in 1755. He served in H.M.S. Guernsey (In command) in 1756. He served in H.M.S. Barfleur (In command) in 1775. He served in H.M.S. Princess Royal (In command) in 1777. He served in H.M.S. Namur (In command) in 1778. He sat on the court-martial of Admiral Keppel. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the White RN in 1779. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 26/09/1780) and served as Port Admiral at Plymouth in 1783. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the White RN (With seniority dated 24/09/1787). He was appointed as the Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Newfoundland 29/04/1789 - 03/09/1792. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Red RN (With seniority dated 21/09/1790), He was appointed as a Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 01/02/1793). He was appointed as a Admiral of the White RN (With seniority dated 01/06/1795). He served as Commander-in-Chief at Portsmouth 1799-1803.
