He entered the Royal Navy in 1736/37-1741 as a scholar at the Academy in Portsmouth. He served in H.M.S. Tilbury. He served in H.M.S. Romney and H.M.S. Princess Mary. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 1743/44). He served in H.M.S. Anglesea and H.M.S. Royal Sovereign. He was appointed as a Commander RN in 1746. He served in H.M.S. Serpent (In command) in 1746. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 21/05/1748). He served in H.M.S. Inverness (In command) in 1748. He served in H.M.S. Romney (In command) in 1755.
