Biography
He was living in Toronto ON where he was a salesman at the time of his recruitment. He was well known as a lacrosse and rugby player. In 1914 he was the Quarterback of the Toronto Argonauts (Grey Cup Champions).
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant RNAS in Ottawa, December 30, 1915). He served in RNAS Eastchurch. He served in RNAS Eastbourne (under training) 18/03/1916. He served in RNAS Westgate 18/06/1916. He was appointed as a Flight Lieutenant (Temp.) RNAS. He served in RNAS Mudros 1916. He served in #2 Wing 25/07/1916. He served in #2 Wing (Roumanian Flight) 18/12/1916. He served in RNAS Eastbourne 11/05/1917. He served in SE Area for #206 TDS 01/05/1918. (He is reported to have been with King Ferdinand's army during the Roumanian retreat from Bucharest, having left the city one day ahead of the enemy.) (He was demobilized.) (He was mobilized for Second World War service.) (He was appointed as a Captain (intelligence officer) debriefing pilots on coastal patrols and submarine hunting in Gander and Yarmouth. (He was demobilized.)

Anecdotes
Patrick J. Shield (grandson) states "He escaped out through Russia and and eventually Norway back to the UK. His group of flyers had audiences with Queen Maria of Romania and then with Cyril - Tsar Nicholas brother in St Petersburg, where they were given diplomatic passports by the British Ambassador and all military identification was taken away for their own protection and the planes destroyed to keep technology protected."
