He was qualified as a lawyer. He was a retired partner from Stewart McKelvey where he practiced law for over 50 years. He was also a past managing partner in the firm. John was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1972. He was a past president of the Nova Scotia Barristers Society.

He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (S) (UNTD) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 03/04/1950). He served in HMCS Scotian for UNTD 1949-1951. (He was released.)
