He was the nephew of the Arctic explorer Sir George Nares. He was the Manager of the Bond Department at the firm Osler, Hammond & Nanton. He attended McGill University. |

He was appointed as a Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RNAS 1915. He was appointed as a Flight Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RNAS. He served in H.M.S. Manxman (Aircraft Carrier) 1916. (He was demobilized). He was appointed as a Lieutenant RCNVR (With seniority dated 20/05/1922). He served in the Winnipeg Company RCNVR 1923. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander (With seniority dated 20/05/1930). He served in the Winnipeg Division of the RCNVR as Commanding Officer 1931-1933. (Mobilized for World War Two service), He was appointed as a Commander (Temp.) RCNVR (With seniority dated 01/01/1940) (Promoted from the Lieutenant-Commanders List). He served in the Winnipeg Division of the RCNVR as Commanding Officer 1940-1941. In 1941 he served in HMCS Venture (Gaspe QC). In 1942 he served on the Staff of the Canadian Naval Attache Washington DC. In 1943 he served on Staff of Commanding Officer Pacific Coast and as Liaison Officer to Admiral Commanding US Naval 13th District (Seattle WA USA) (He was demobilized 03/06/1946.) |

He received the Legion of Merit (USA) ""For exceptionally meritorious service to the Government of the United States as Assistant Naval Attache from March 1942 to August 1942, and later as Acting Naval Attache from August 1942 to February 1943, at the Canadian Embassy in Washington. During this period, Commander Nares performed the functions of his office with exceptional diplomacy and in close co-operation with the United States Navy." |
