He started as an Apprentice in sailing ships. (In 1870c he was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He was the Master of the bark Grasmere in 1878. He served as First Officer in the steamship Ben Gore. In 1880-1883 he served as the Master of the bark Tiber. In 1883 the Tiber sank in a gale in Royal Roads. He was Master of the ship Chrysolite. He was the Master of the bark Nanaimo for four years. In 1891 he was qualified as a Marine Pilot in the Victoria and Esquimalt Pilotage District. |
