Biography
He was a farmer at the time of his recruitment into the navy. He was the son of William Nightingale Snr. and Sarah Jane Ross.
 
Military Service
He served as an Ordinary Seaman RNCVR. In 1917 he served in HMT Loch Eye. (He died on active service).

Anecdotes
He served in HMT Loch Eye when she was sunk with all hands on Friday 20th April 1917 by a mine from the German submarine UC-33 one and a quarter miles south-west off Hook Point, Fethard, Co. Wexford. Seven were lost with two unidentified seamen being recovered and buried in Templetown grave yard; one identified sailor, R. Pirrie, was returned home to his family for burial.
