The son of former Premier of Ontario Harry Nixon, he was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Liberal in a 1962 by-election following his father's death. He was elected as Member Provincial Parliament of Ontario - Brant (-Oxford, -Norfolk. He was elected its leader in 1967 and remained in this position until 1976. He was a cabinet minister in the government of David Peterson from 1985 to 1990 as Treasurer, Minister of Economics, Minister of Revenue and Government House Leader. He served as Agent General for the Province of Ontario in the UK and as Chairman of the Board - Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd (AECL). |

He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman (Officer Candidate UNTD) RCN(R) 1946. He served in HMCS Star for UNTD 1946. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RCN(R) (With seniority dated 06/02/1950). In 1950 he served in HMCS Star. (He was released.) |
