He was living in Vancouver BC at the time of his recruitment into the navy.

He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) 1959. In 1959 he served in HMCS Discovery for UNTD. He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant (CND) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 01/10/1961).
