He was living on Saturna Island BC Canada at the time of his recruitment into the navy.

He was appointed as a Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RNAS 1915. He was appointed as a Flight Sub-Lieutenant RNAS.

Anecdotes
Flying a Short 827 Seaplane, he was sent out to intercept a hostile and did not return. Ships were sent in search, but a gale blew up and the vessels were ordered back to port.
