He was given the 'Freedom of the City of London'.
 
Military Service
He entered the Royal Navy in 1756. He served in H.M.S. Centurion. He was appointed as a Midshipman RN 1756. He was present at the capture of Quebec in 1759. He was appointed as a Master's Mate RN and then commissioned as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 29/11/1766). He served in H.M.S. Niger. He served in H.M.S. Aldborough and H.M.S. Egmont. He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 25/06/1773). He served in H.M.S. Martin (In command) 1773. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 28/08/1777) and served in H.M.S. Deal Castle (In command) 1777. He served in H.M.S. Maidstone (In command). He served in H.M.S. Iphegenia (In command) 1782 and H.M.S. Dictator (In command) 1783. He was appointed as a Commodore RN 1787. He served as Commander-in-Chief Leeward Islands (Pendant in H.M.S. Jupiter) 1787-90, (He reverted to Captain RN). He served in H.M.S. Formidable (In command) 1790. He served in H.M.S. Audacious (In command) 1792. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 04/07/1794). He served as Commander-in-Chief Jamaica (Flag in H.M.S. Raisonable). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Red RN (With seniority dated 01/06/1795). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the White RN (With seniority dated 14/02/1799). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Red RN (With seniority dated 01/01/1801). He was the Commander-in-Chief in the River St. Lawrence, along the Coast of Nova Scotia, the islands of St. John and Cape Breton and in the Bay of Fundy and the Islands of Bermuda (Flag in H.M.S. America and H.M.S. St. Albans) in 1800-01. (He was third in command at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent.)
