He was a student at the time of his recruitment into the navy.

He was appointed as a Wireless Telegraph Learner RNCVR (With seniority dated 06/03/1918). In 1918 he served in HMCS Niobe as Addional for Duty and Instruction at Naval Wireless Telegraph School. (He was demobilized.)
