He was a farmer at the time of his recruitment into the navy.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman RNCVR. He served in the RNCVR during the First World War. He was killed serving in HMS Lucknow (hired trawler minesweeper when she was mined and sunk in the English Channel).
