Biography
Pickmore only stayed for two months in 1816, and his second-in-command, Commander David Buchan, remained to take charge. Pickmore did not return until the autumn of 1817, and became the first governor of Newfoundland to stay the winter.
 
Military Service
He was stationed on the Newfoundland Station as a Lieutenant RN in 1777. He was appointed as a Captain RN. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN. By 1814 he was promoted to Vice-Admiral RN, and he was appointed as Commodore-Governor of Newfoundland in 1816, arriving in September that year. He was the first Governor to be resident year-round, but died while in office.
