Biography
In 1875 he was an able seaman in the "St. Vincent" until 10th Jan. 1876. He was Boatswain/2nd Mate in the "Loche Awe" until 10th June 1878. From the 25th Feb. 1879 to 1895 he was employed by the S.A. Railways as a clerk. He married Julia Ethel Blyth on 30th April 1884 at St. Paul's Adelaide. In 1894 he was a committee member of the South Australian Young Patriotic Association. In 1896 F.H. changed his profession to Stockbroker and was allowed to trade from 30th July 1896 as F.H. Poole & Co. And had offices at 11 Davenport Chambers in Currie Street, Adelaide. He was an active member of the Adelaide Rowing Club winning many races and regattas in the 1880s to late 1890s. He left Adelaide and his young family in 1901 and served as Marine Superintendant for the Federal Line in Sydney NSW 1901-1905. In 1905 FH arrived in London as Capt. F.H. Poole and is describe as a Cape Horner, and tells how he was washed overboard and then washed back on at the Cape during a Hurricane, suffering only a broken nose and moving on to New York. The next record is of him as a Real Estate Salesman based at the Royal George Hotel, Edmonton, Canada in 1912. At this time he was an Officer of the Militia and an Adjutant of the League of Frontiersmen in addition to his employment.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Lieutenant RNCVR (With seniority dated 21/05/1917). He served in HMCS Niobe (For Miscellaneous and Special Service) 1916. He was appointed Assistant Naval Transport Officer at HMCS Niobe in Halifax NS as of 21st. May 1917. His duties were expanded to include those of Coaling Officer 28th Oct 1918. He received a personal thank-you letter from Admiral W O Story dated 12/05/1919. (He was demobilised 21/10/1919.)

Anecdotes
An extract dated 25/10/1919 from an un-named Halifax newspaper describes his role at Halifax, his survival of a fire in a Naval Office, resulting in serious burns and the loss of all personal positions and his towing and beaching of the SS Picton in the Eastern Passage with the tug G S Mayes. He was intimately involved with the beaching of the Picton in the great Halifax explosion.
