Biography
He was a JP for Brecknockshire. He committed suicide just prior to attacking Petropavlovsk Russia on 30/08/1854 and was buried ashore there.
 
Military Service
He entered Royal Navy as a First Class Volunteer RN (With seniority dated 01/01/1801) serving in H.M.S. Ardent. He was present at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801 and was captured twice by the Danes. He served in H.M.S. Blenheim in 1802. He served in H.M.S. Centaur. He served in H.M.S. Galatea. He served in H.M.S. Hyaena and in H.M.S. Centaur in 1806. He was present at the capture of four French frigates from Rochefort. In 1807 he was present for the Admiral Gambier expedition to Copenhagen 1807. In 1808 he was wounded in the hand in a boat action in the Baltic. He was appointed as A/Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 01/04/1809) serving in H.M.S. Ardent and confirmed as Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 28/09/1809). He served in H.M.S. Hawke as Second Lieutenant in 1811. He was present for several engagements and boat actions on the French coast. He commanded a small boat in action at Barfleur 19/08/1811. He was severely wounded in October 1811 while boarding a French brig with one companion. He served in H.M.S. Mulgrave 1812. He served in H.M.S. San Josef 1813. Hesent for an action off Toulon in 1813. He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 06/12/1813) serving in H.M.S. Volcano (Bomb vessel) (In command). He engaged in operations against Baltimore (1814), the Potomac (1814) and New Orleans (1815) in North America. Under a flag of truce he carried the news of the end of the war to the American garrison at Mobile. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 13/06/1815). He served in H.M.S. Portland (In command) 1834. He was appointed as the Superintendent of the Sheerness Dockyard in 1846. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 06/11/1850). He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of HM Ships and Vessels on the Pacific Station (Flag carried in H.M.S. President) 1853.
