He was serving in the Canadian Army in World War One before transferring to the Royal Naval Air Service. He served in #28 (RNAS) Squadron in Italy. (He transferred to the RAF.) He served in Russia in 1919-20. Early in 1919 he was sent to Archangel, North Russia, and assigned to Her Majesty's Ship Pegasus. This converted merchant ship weighed 3,070 tons and accommodated nine seaplanes. On July 20, Rankin was injured when his aircraft crashed into a barge on takeoff. He was appointed as a Flight Lieutenant RAF. He was appointed as a Squadron Leader RAF. He was appointed as a Wing Commander RAF (With seniority dated 03/07/1937). He served as Director of Intelligence 1939. He was appointed as a Group Captain RAF. He was appointed as a Air Commodore RAF. He served in Japan with the Occupation Forces. (He retired in 1951.) |
