(He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He served in the sealing vessel Maude as Master. (He was appointed as a Marine Pilot in 1900) In 1900-1901 he served in the Nanaimo Pilotage District.)

Anecdotes
He was reported to have been lost in the wreck of the Bristol 09/01/1902 between Green and Grey Islands. The Bristol left Ladysmith and picked up the Pilot at Nanaimo at 1300 on 31/12/1901.
