He went to sea in 1866. In 1877 he joined the Cunard Line as Second Officer serving in the Etruria and other vessels. He was appointed as a Chief Officer in the White Star Line. He assisted in the construction of the Islander on the Clyde, sailing her to Victoria on completion. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He remained with the Canadian Pacific Navigation Co. He was appointed as a Marine Pilot for the Burrard Inlet and Fraser River. He joined the CPR B.C.L. & R.S. in February 1897. He was Master of the Lytton, the Nelson, the Moyie and the Sicamous. (He was retired in 1911.) He was a partner with W.D. Carter in several tugs (Westover; Starling; Squid; Yuno). |
