He went to sea in 1730 under terms of a Kings Letter of Service. His term as governor was only for the 1749 season, however, he remained in Newfoundland for three years. He was created First Baron Rodney of Rodney Stoke Somerset in 1782 for his distinguished service against Le Comte de Grasse. |

He volunteered in the Royal Navy in 1732 as a "king's letter boy" in HMS Sunderland. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 15/12/1740). He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 09/11/1742). He was a Commander under Admiral Hawke at the defeat of L'Etendiere squadron in 1747. In 1748, Rodney was appointed to HMS Rainbow as Governor of Newfoundland. In 1749 he served in HMS Plymouth (In command). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Blue (With seniority dated 19/05/1759). He was appointed as Commander-in-Chief in the West Indies in 1761. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 21/10/1762). He became a baronet in 1764. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the White RN (With seniority dated 18/10/1770). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Red RN (With seniority dated 24/10/1770). He was appointed as an Admiral of the White RN (With seniority dated 29/01/1778). He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief North America in 1780. He defeated Langara's fleet off Cape St. Vincent in 1780. He was appointed as Rear-Admiral of Great Britain in 1771. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of Great Britain (With seniority dated 06/11/1781). In June 1782 he was created a peer as Baron Rodney of Stoke-Rodney. |
