Biography
He was living in St. John's NL at the time of his recruitment. He was the younger brother of Senator Bill Rompkey. He was an English professor for many years at Memorial University and was involved in the creation of books that explored the history of Newfoundland and Labrador. The University of Toronto Press published his biography of British doctor Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell — “Grenfell of Labrador: A Biography” — in 1991.

He was appointed as an Officer Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) 1961. He served in HMCS Cabot for UNTD 1961. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RCN(R). He was appointed as a Lieutenant RCN(R). He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander (NR). He was appointed as a Commander (NR). He served in HMCS Cabot as Commanding Officer 1984-1988. (He was released.)
