He graduated from University of Toronto 1954. He was Chairman of Jones, Gable and Company Limited,
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 20/02/1950). He served in HMCS York for UNTD 1949-1953. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant (S) RCN(R) 1953. He was appointed as a Lieutenant (S) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 01/07/1955). In 1960 he served in HMCS Donnacona on the Retired List. (He was released.)

His citation for the Order of Canada "Donald Ross is a private donor whose generous contributions have made a difference in the lives of countless Canadians. With little fanfare, he supports a wide range of causes, including the Canadian Canoe Museum, Smile Theatre, New Leaf Yoga and Students on Ice. He has been engaged in a number of conservation efforts, playing a key role in the creation of the Ninginganiq National Wildlife Area, a protected preserve for bowhead whales."
