Biography
In September 1958, Peter Russell accepted a position at the University of Toronto and rose rapidly to full professor in 1967 at which time he was awarded the C.D. Howe Fellowship which took him and his family to Harvard University for his first sabbatical. On returning to the University of Toronto in 1968, Russell served for a year before accepting an offer from the Rockefeller Foundation to spend two years at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. In 1971 he returned to Toronto to serve as the Principal of Innis College. He was appointed as a Professor Emeritus - Political Science - University of Toronto. (He retired in 1996)

He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) 1951. In 1951 he served in HMCS York for UNTD. (He was released.)

Anecdotes
He served as President - Retired Academics and Librarians University of Toronto; President - College and University Retiree Associations of Canada; President - Canadian Law & Society Association; President - Canadian Political Science Association. He was a Rhodes Scholar. In 1992 he became Foreign Secretary of the Royal Society. In 1990, Russell was elected President of the Canadian Political Science Association and received in 1990 an honorary degree from the University of Calgary. In 1993, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the Law Society of Upper Canada, the only non-lawyer ever to be so honoured. He spent a large part of his 1993 sabbatical in Europe, meeting with constitutional reformers in the United Kingdom and the European Union.
