He was the son of Captain John Flett Sabiston. He was apprenticed in 1869 between Nanaimo and San Francisco and later to Europe. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He was Master of the Wanderer of which he was part owner until 1884. He was licenced as a Marine Pilot in 1883 in the Nanaimo Pilotage District. |

He was on board the Romulus on 30/03/1893 when she grounded in Porlier Pass . She was holed in te bow and filled with water. After five hours she was flated and moved to Esquimalt BC for repairs.On 29/10/1893 he was the Pilot on board the steamer San Mateo when she was damaged by a coal-gas explosion in Semiahmoo Bay. He was the Pilot on Board the Barracouta when she was damaged by an explosion of coal gas. |
