He went to sea as a boy. He arrived in Victoria on the HBC vessel Norman Morrison in 1852 while serving as a Seaman. He served in the HBC Beaver as a Seaman. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He sailed out of English and Scottish ports. He was appointed as the Sailing Master on the HBC Beaver (under Captains Dodd & Stewart). He left the Beaver in Fort Simpson and retured to Victoria in a dugout canoe. He was appointed as the Overground Manager at the coal mines in Nanaimo, joining the Vancouver Coal Co. when they were sold by the HBCo. He married Lucy Bate, sister of Mark Bate. He was licenced as a Marine Pilot in 1858. In 1867 he resumed his career as a Marine Pilot working up the coast as far as Sitka Alaska. In 1875 he served as Harbour Master for Nanaimo and served as Nanaimo Harbour Pilot. He was licnced as a Marine Pilot 01/04/1877. He served as Alderman for the City of Nanaimo. (He was retired 30/09/1896.) |
