Biography
He was the son of Lieutenant-Commander (E) Henry Stuart Salt RCN and the father of Commander James Stuart Salt RCN. In 1958, he entered a training program in the Wallsend Slipway in Newcastle upon Tyne, England as an apprentice fitter working on the manufacture of large diesel engines. He continued his training in the south of England, working in the manufacturer and servicing of marine pumps and compressors with Hamworthy Engineering and attended the Southampton Technical College on a pre-sea marine course. He served in CCGS Labrador (Icebreaker). He served in CS Lord Kelvin (Cable ship). He served in MV W. Harold Rea (Shell tanker). He served in MV White Rose (Shell Tanker). He served in MV Blue Trader (Refrigerated cargo). He served in CCGS Montmorency (Buoy tender). He served in MV William Carson (CN passenger). He served in MV Petite Forte (CN passenger). He served in MV Atlantic John Park (New construction – Deep sea seiner). He served in MV Bluenose (CN passenger). In 1971, he qualified as a Chief Engineer.

He was appointed as an Able-Seaman RCN(R). (He was released.) He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (E) (UNTD) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 1955). He served in HMCS Cabot for UNTD 1955-1956. He served in HMCS Star. He served in HMCS Gaspe for Sea Training. He served in HMCS Beaver for Sea Training. He served in HMCS Porte St. Louis for Sea Training. He served in HMCS Stadacona for Training. He served in HMCS Fort Erie for Sea Training. (He was released.)
