Biography
He was elected as a Member of Parliament 1750-52. He was elected as a Member of Parliament 1754-75 for Yorkshire.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Midshipman RN in 1727 serving in H.M.S. Seahorse 1727. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN in 1734 serving in H.M.S. Hector. He served in H.M.S. Exeter. He served in H.M.S. Norfolk. He served in H.M.S. Oxford. He served in H.M.S. Sunderland. He served in H.M.S. Centurion. He was appointed as a Commander RN serving in H.M.S. Trial. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 26/09/1741). (He commanded a captured Spanish Brig captured by Admiral Anson). He served in H.M.S. Plymouth (In command). He served in H.M.S. Sapphire (In command). He served in H.M.S. Gloucester (In command). While in Gloucester he captured a ship and received a large money prize as reward. He served in H.M.S. Yarmouth (In command). He served in H.M.S. Tiger (In command). He was appointed as a Commodore and Commander-in-Chief of Newfoundland Station 1752. He was Commodore of a squadron protecting Newfoundland fisheries 1752. He was appointed as the Treasurer of Greenwich Hospital in 1754. He served in H.M.S. Prince (In command). He was appointed as the Comptroller of the Navy in 1755. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral (With seniority dated 06/1756). He was appointed as the Deputy Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Blue (With seniority dated 14/02/1759). He was appointed as Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean. He commanded the large naval force used in the amphibious operation against Quebec 1759. He was appointed as a Admiral (With seniority dated 18/10/1770). He received the thanks of the House of Commons in 1760. He was appointed as a Member of the Board of Admiralty in 1766. (He died on 07/12/1777 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.) (He served under Admiral Anson on his voyage around the world.)
