Biography
He sailed out of Melbourne in 1853 in merchant vessels. In 1856 he served in the steamship Golden Age between San Francisco and Panama. In 1858 he was Quartermaster in the Brother Jonathan and later on the Labouchere. He was Mate and Second Mate in the Fidelater, Alexander and Enterprise. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner #1348). In 1872 he was in the Cariboo and Fly, in 1875 he served as Master of the of the sloop Thornton and afterward as Master of the Grappler. In 1876 he was a Marine Pilot for the Victoria District to 1883. In 1884 he took command of the steamer Pilot. He spent a season mining in the Cariboo in 1861 and in 1862 ran between the Sandwich Islands in the schooner Alberni. He was Second Mate in the Martha Ridout in 1869 between Victoria and Australia.
