In 1902 he emigrated to Canada and took up residence in Edmonton later that year. He was living in Edmonton AB where he was working as a motorman at the time of his enlistment in 1916. |
Military Service |

In 1887 he enlisted in the 1st Battalion, The Gordon Highlanders (British Army). He served in India from 1888-1899 and was part of the battles at Chitral and Tirah (in what is now Pakistan). He had a brief stay in garrison in the United Kingdom from 1899-1900. He served in South Africa from 1900-1902. He retired from the army in 1902. Shortly after the First World War broke out, in January 1915, now aged 42, he enlisted in the Loyal Edmonton Regiment. After a month of service, in the Canadian Army, he was forced to retire to take care of “family issues”, He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman RNCVR 1916. He served in the Pacific Sub-Division of the RNCVR 1916. (He was demobilized.) |
