Biography
He was the eldest son of Vice-Admiral Lord Hugh Seymour, and grandson of the 1st Marquess of Hertford. (He was wounded in action at Santo Domingo in 1806. While in command H.M.S. Kingfisher he towed Lord Cochrane's H.M.S. Pallis from jeopardy in defence of the Island of Aix) His eldest son, Francis Hugh Seymour, a Captain in the Scots Fusilier Guards, succeeded his cousin as 5th Marquess of Hertford in that year. In 1811 he married Georgina Mary Berkeley.

He was appointed as a First Class Volunteer RN 1797. He served in H.M.S. Princess Augusta (Yacht) 1797. He served in H.M.S. Sans Pareil (his father's flagship). He served in H.M.S. Victory (Lord Nelson's flagship). He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 12/10/1804). He served in H.M.S. Victory. He served in H.M.S. Donegal. He served in H.M.S. Northumberland 1806. He was wounded, with the loss of some teeth, in Duckworth's action off San Domingo in 1806. He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 23/01/1806). He served in H.M.S. Kingfisher (Sloop In command) 1806. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 29/07/1806) (just under the age of 19 at the time). He served in H.M.S. Aurora (In command). He served in H.M.S. Pallas (In command) 1809. He served in H.M.S. Manilla (In command) (wrecked in his absence off Ireland). He served in H.M.S. Fortune (In command). He served in H.M.S. Leonidas (In command) 1813 (capturing an American privateer, the Paul Jones (16 guns.). He served in H.M.S. Briton (In command) 1827. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 23/11/1841). He joined the Board of Admiralty as a Naval Lord after his promotion to flag rank in 1841 and continued until his appointment as Commander-in-Chief in the Pacific. He served as Commander-in-Chief HM Ships and Vessels on the Pacific Station (Flag in H.M.S. Collingwood) 1844. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral (With seniority dated 27/03/1850). He served as Commander-in-Chief North America and West Indies Station (Flag in H.M.S. Cumberland) 1851. He served as Commander-in-Chief Portsmouth 1856-9. He was appointed as an Admiral RN (With seniority dated 14/05/1857). He was appointed as an Admiral of the Fleet RN (With seniority dated 20/11/1866). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the United Kingdom 1863. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the United Kingdom 1865.
