Biography
He was a rancher at the time of his recruitment into the navy. He was the brother of Able-Seaman Austin Smythe RNCVR and Able-Seaman Gordon Smythe RNCVR.

He was appointed as an Able-Seaman RNCVR. He was appointed as a Leading Seaman RNCVR. (He was demobilized).

Anecdotes
Vivien Warne states "I volunteer at Ford Park Cemetery (formerly known as Plymouth, Devonport and Stonehouse Cemetery) in Plymouth Devon UK. Leading Seaman James Alfred Smythe died of diptheria at the Royal Naval Hospital in East Stonehouse Plymouth May 3rd, 1919. He is buried at Ford Park; grave reference GK 46 26 - this is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintained grave."
