Biography
On completion of high school, he took training in seamanship and soon rose to the rank of First Mate in the Dutch Merchant Marine. immigrated to Canada to join the rest of his family, and settled in Vancouver. Arend obtained his Bachelor of Education degree at UBC, and later his Master of Arts in French language at SFU. 25-year high school teaching career in Coquitlam and later in North Vancouver.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) 1953. In 1953 he served in HMCS Discovery for UNTD. He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant RCN(R) (Withs eniority dated 01/05/1956). He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RCN(R) (Withs eniority dated 01/05/1957). He was appointed as an A/Lieutenant RCN(R) (With seniority dated 01/05/1958). In 1958 he served in HMCS Discovery. (He was released.)
