Military Service
He entered the Royal Navy in 1841. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 29/05/1848). He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 25/03/1854). He served in H.M.S. Wasp and then in H.M.S. Barracouta in 1855. While in H.M.S. Barracouta on the East Indian Station he was detached to blockade Petropavlovsk Russia in 1855. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 19/11/1860) and Commodore RN (With seniority dated 08/041870) as Senior Officer In Command of Ships on the Australia Station 1870. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 22/01/1877). He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief HM Ships and Vessels on the Pacific Station (Flag carried in H.M.S. Triumph) 1879, He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 31/12/1881).
