Biography
Before his naval service he served with the Chinese Maritime Customs Service prior to the Second World War as the skipper of small Revenue Cutters. After his naval service he was the Chief Ship Division, Marine Sciences Branch, Dept. Mines and Technical Surveys (Ottawa), and Director of Marine Operations of the Canadian Coast Guard. (He was elected as a Trustee of the Maritime Museum of British Columbia in 1973.

Anecdotes
He played an important role in the minesweeping and clearing of channels to the Normandy Beachead prior to D-Day. He was awarded the DSC 01/01/1945 for "gallantry or outstanding service in the face of the enemy or for zeal, patience and cheerfulness in dangerous waters" and a Bar to the DSC on 13/02/1945 for "good services in minesweeping in invasion." He was the first ex-reserve officer to become an officer of Flag Rank in Canada.)
