Military Service
He entered the Royal Navy in 1689 as a Captain's Servant to Sir Isaac Townsend (then in command H.M.S. Ipswich). He served in H.M.S. Lincoln and H.M.S. Vigo. He was commissioned a a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 24/09/1707) serving in H.M.S. Hastings. He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 30/06/1719). He served in H.M.S. Poole (Fireship) (In command). He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 09/02/1720). He served in H.M.S. Success (In command) 1719/20. He served in H.M.S. Plymouth 1734. He served in H.M.S. Berwick 1739. He served in H.M.S. Shrewsbury in 1740. He served in H.M.S. Shrewsbury (In command) 1741. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Red (With seniority dated 23/06/1744). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Blue (With seniority dated 23/04/1745). He served as Third in Command in the Mediterranean (Flag in H.M.S. Dorsetshire) 1745. He was on detached services in the West Indies 1745. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the White (With seniority dated 14/07/1746). He was appointed to Louisbourg in 1746. (He was the Commander at Louisbourg in 1747.) He was appointed as an Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 15/07/1747). He was appointed as an Admiral of the White RN (With seniority dated 01/02/1757). He was appointed as the Resident Commissioner at Portsmouth. He served as the Governor of Greenwich Hospital 1754-65 and while he was the Governor of Greenwich Hospital he took custody of Admiral Byng.
